ADOLF HITLER'S BERGHOF DESSERT PLATE
A great (and ironic) rarity, a dessert plate owned by Adolf Hitler and used informally by him at the Berghof. The attractive porcelain plate, 7 5/8" diameter with gilt rim, bears a hand-painted image of a young Bavarian lady in a traditional dress and bonnet surrounded by climbing roses, placing a snipped rose onto a plate held by a winged cherub. Beneath her, entwined in roses, fruit and flowers are the gilt initials "A H". Fine condition. This item was purchased by one of America's most noted collectors of Lincolniana, and an internationally recognized surgeon, from militaria dealers Mohawk Arms, who have over forty years experience. Provenance, available to potential bidders, includes a copy of Mohawk's 1975 catalog listing which describes their ten-year search for accredited Hitler-owned items, resulting in only 19 items of which this plate is one, illustrated, and noting that it came from the Berghof. Also present is a copy of Mohawk's 1975 letter to the purchaser and invoice for the glass. Incredibly, the box containing this glass was opened in January, 2009! Of course, this was a very informal item, undoubtedly used only in private. Sofie Stork (1903-1981) was a friend of Eva Braun and the sometime lover of Wilhelm Brueckner. She was decorated at the Berghof, and essentially financially supported by Hitler. At war's end she was briefly interned. A true rarity. SOLD
