The First Battle of Smolensk was a large scale battle during the opening stage of Operation Barbarossa in World War II, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. It took place in the region around the city of Smolensk between 10 July and 10 September 1941, about 400 km west of Moscow. At that point the Wehrmacht had advanced 500 km (310 mi) into the USSR in the mere 18 days that had elapsed since the start of the invasion on 22 June 1941. During the battle the German army encountered unexpected resistance, leading to a severe delay in their advance on Moscow.

Ultimately, three Soviet armies (the 16th19th and the 20th army) were encircled and destroyed just to the south of Smolensk, though significant numbers from the 19th and 20th managed to escape the pocket. Some historians have asserted that the losses in terms of men and materiel incurred by the Wehrmacht during this drawn-out battle, together with the 2-month delay in the march towards Moscow, were decisive for the Wehrmacht's defeat by the Red Army at the end of the Battle of Moscow three months later in December 1941.

Rare Herman Goering Personal Suit Case Removed Items

Many years ago I acquired one of Herman Goering's personal suitcases that was purchased from Nuremburg guards family here in North Carolina . I originally sold most of this archive to the WW2 museum in Boston Mass " Museum of World War II ". You can see the suitcase on their website or visit to the museum and see it in person.  http://museumofworldwarii.org .  These two HG personal containers came from it originally and were removed before they purchased this balance some years ago. Both pieces have the roll stamped Herman Goering Family crest on the item. One is a perfume bottle and the other is for foot powder. Both items have Herman Goering's personal silversmiths proofs clearly marked on the lid of the bottle and body of the foot powder container.  The perfume bottle has some damage to the glass. The powder container is 4 1/2 inch long and oval in shape. The cologne bottle is 3 1/4 by 1 1/2 inch and 3 1/2 inch tall. The collector that owns them today ask me to consign these 2 pieces   You get the pair      Herman Goering's Cigar is not part of this offering as its been sold separately

Rare German Kriegsmarine 1940 WWII KM Eagle M Binoculars

Cased 1940 Kriegsmarine Binoculars 7 x 50 Power

This is an incredible and very desirable pair of Cased Kriegsmarine 7x50 Power Field Glasses.  The German armed forces typically used the 6 x 30 power field glasses.  The Kriegsmarine utilized the of stronger powered 7 x 50 which were regularly issued to naval commanders, and watch/deck personnel.  These binoculars are a tooled alloy construction. The lens bodies retain all of their original rough textured black finish . The alloy focus adjustment dials still function and the optics are still very crisp and clear.  The central lens joining bracket with swivel width adjustment is fully intact and functional.  The left hand side, ocular end, body panel is well marked with impressed serial number, "286962",  the power, "7 x 50", and the makers mark "Ernst Leitz, Wetzlar". The right hand side has the Eagle over M, indicating use by the Kriegsmarine.   The right side also has the number 9228 over an N.   The N indicates Northern Area of Kriegsmarine operations.  The field glasses still retain the original blackened leather carrying strap and the strap is in very nice condition.   The bakelite lens cover is still fully intact with the original accordian type elastic strap.  These binoculars  come with the original simulated grained black leather carrying case with sheet metal, alloy and blackened leather fittings.  The case features a fold back top lid with a horizontal riveted blackened leather hinge.  The leather pull to close the top is fully intact and is in nice condition.   Case is nicely maker marked & dated 1940 but does have an Eagle and Swastika stamped into the lid over an M. The lid is also marked in white paint, 5120.  The case is in exceptionally nice condition.  Overall, an amazing condition pair of Cased Kriegsmarine binoculars, complete in all respects.   SOLD
